Hreflang tags tell Google which version of a page to serve to users based on their language and country. Correct implementation is important for international websites.
Hreflang in Google Search Console
Search Console does not have a dedicated hreflang report, but you can check for issues in these places:
- URL Inspection tool - Inspect individual URLs to see if hreflang tags are detected and parsed correctly
- International Targeting report - Found under Legacy tools; shows country targeting and language tag issues
Common Hreflang Errors
- Missing return tag - If page A hreflang points to page B, page B must hreflang back to page A (return tag required)
- Invalid language code - Use BCP 47 format (e.g.,
en-US, noten_US) - Same hreflang for different pages - Each URL in a hreflang set should have a unique language/country combination
- Hreflang pointing to non-indexable pages - All hreflang URLs must be indexable
