When adding a property to Google Search Console, you choose between two types:
Domain Property
- Covers ALL subdomains (www, blog, shop, api, etc.)
- Covers both http:// and https://
- Requires DNS TXT record verification
- Single view of your entire domain
- Recommended for most users
URL Prefix Property
- Covers only the exact prefix entered
- https://www.example.com ≠ https://example.com
- Multiple verification options available
- Useful for tracking specific subdirectories
- Good if you can't access DNS settings
Which should you choose? For most website owners, a Domain property is the best choice because it gives you a complete picture of all your site's traffic in one place. Use URL Prefix if you need to track a specific subdomain or path separately, or if you do not have access to DNS settings.
