Domain Property vs URL Prefix in Google Search Console

When adding a property to Google Search Console, you choose between two types:

Domain Property

  • Covers ALL subdomains (www, blog, shop, api, etc.)
  • Covers both http:// and https://
  • Requires DNS TXT record verification
  • Single view of your entire domain
  • Recommended for most users

URL Prefix Property

  • Covers only the exact prefix entered
  • https://www.example.com ≠ https://example.com
  • Multiple verification options available
  • Useful for tracking specific subdirectories
  • Good if you can't access DNS settings

Which should you choose? For most website owners, a Domain property is the best choice because it gives you a complete picture of all your site's traffic in one place. Use URL Prefix if you need to track a specific subdomain or path separately, or if you do not have access to DNS settings.
