Ahrefs alternatives: 6 options, and when to stay put

Most people searching for an Ahrefs alternative want a cheaper suite with backlinks and keyword data. GSC Wizard is not one, and this page will not pretend it is. The real suite alternatives come first, then the narrower case we do fit, which is teams who pay for Ahrefs but mostly use it to look at their own site, and then the free options.

Disclosure: we make one of the alternatives on this page (GSC Wizard). It gets the same "watch for" note as every other tool, and the page starts with the cases where the honest advice is to stay with Ahrefs. Facts about other products come from each vendor's own website, checked October 3, 2026, and every source is linked at the bottom. Spot an error? Tell us.

Best like-for-like alternative

Semrush. The closest match, with a keyword database and backlink index of similar size, plus PPC, local and content toolkits.

Best cheaper suite

SE Ranking. Daily rank tracking, audits and research from €109 a month, with a 14-day trial.

Best if you only analyse your own site

GSC Wizard with Ahrefs Free. Deep Search Console analysis for €17 a month, and a free site audit and limited backlink data alongside.

Should you leave Ahrefs at all?

Ahrefs has no free trial, so people weigh it carefully. Start with whether you should leave at all.

Stay with Ahrefs if

  • You do link building or digital PR. Its backlink index is the reason most people pay for it.
  • You do keyword research for topics you do not rank for yet. That needs a keyword database, which first-party tools do not have.
  • You analyse competitors every week in Site Explorer.
  • You could drop to Ahrefs Free. If you only look at your own verified sites, the free tier may already be enough.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need several users. Each plan includes one, and extra users are listed at €37 to €75 a month each.
  • You mostly use it to look at your own site's traffic. That is an expensive way to read Search Console.
  • You want daily rank updates as standard. Rank Tracker updates weekly by default.
  • You want a trial before you pay. Ahrefs does not offer one.
  • You need white-label client reports. Ahrefs' help centre says it does not currently allow them.

6 Ahrefs alternatives

The suites are listed first because they are what most readers of this page need. Our own tool is fourth, where it belongs here.

1. Semrush

What it is. A broad all-in-one marketing suite, part of Adobe since April 2026. It has a keyword database of more than 27 billion keywords, backlink analytics, competitor organic and paid research, daily position tracking, a site audit crawler, and separate content, local and advertising toolkits, with AI visibility tracking on the plans above the entry one. Connected Search Console data appears in dashboards, report widgets and Organic Traffic Insights, and Semrush states that it never stores it.

Why pick it over Ahrefs. It is the closest match, with a keyword database and backlink index of comparable size, and it goes wider: advertising research, local SEO, content tools and AI visibility. Position Tracking updates daily, where Ahrefs' Rank Tracker updates weekly by default, and there is a 7-day trial.

Watch for. It is not cheaper. The SEO plan is €134.21 a month with one user, and extra users cost from €43. It does not store connected Search Console data at all, where Ahrefs keeps yours while you stay connected. Historical data, the cannibalization report and the Looker Studio integration need the higher plans.

Cost. The SEO plan is €134.21 a month, or €112.52 billed annually, for 5 websites, 500 tracked keywords and one user. Starter is €190.84, Pro+ €286.74 and Advanced €526.49. Extra users cost from €43 a month each. 7-day trial with a card, and a limited free account. Semrush pricing. Price checked Oct 3, 2026.

2. SE Ranking

What it is. A mid-priced all-in-one suite: daily rank tracking, a site audit, keyword and competitor research and backlink monitoring, with Search Console and GA4 connected alongside.

Why pick it over Ahrefs. It covers the same list of jobs (rank tracking, site audit, keyword and competitor research, backlink monitoring) at a lower price, with daily tracking for 2,000 keywords on the entry plan and a 14-day trial without a card. White label is available as an add-on from €59 a month on annual billing, which Ahrefs' help centre says it does not currently allow.

Watch for. Core includes one seat and 10 projects. If your work depends on the size and freshness of the backlink index, compare it with Ahrefs on domains you know before you switch. The trial is long enough for that.

Cost. Core is €109 a month, or €87.20 billed annually, for 10 projects, one seat and 2,000 tracked keywords. Growth is €235. White label is the Agency Pack, from €59 a month, billed annually. 14-day trial without a card. SE Ranking pricing. Price checked Oct 3, 2026.

3. Sistrix

What it is. A German SEO suite best known for its Visibility Index, a long-running benchmark of how visible a domain is in Google across more than 30 countries. It connects Search Console and Analytics alongside its own data.

Why pick it over Ahrefs. Its Visibility Index tracks how visible more than 100 million domains are in Google across 30+ countries, with history, which makes it useful for seeing who won and lost after a Google update. Plans can be cancelled monthly, and there is a 14-day trial.

Watch for. The Start plan costs the same as Ahrefs Lite and includes one user, 3 projects and three months of data history. It is built around visibility and rankings, so check that it covers the specific Ahrefs reports you rely on.

Cost. Start is €119 a month for one user and 3 projects. Plus is €239 and Professional €419. 14-day trial. Sistrix pricing. Price checked Oct 3, 2026.

4. GSC Wizard

What it is. A Search Console, GA4, Bing, Yandex and Google Merchant Center analysis tool. It stores your Search Console history in its own warehouse (up to ten years on stored properties) and builds reports on top: content decay, cannibalization, CTR benchmarks, striking-distance queries, forecasting, anomaly detection and an indexing tracker. Traffic and indexing alerts go to Slack, Microsoft Teams or a webhook, and the same data is available to ChatGPT and Claude through an MCP server, including the Yandex and Merchant Center data.

Why pick it over Ahrefs. Only if the Ahrefs reports you actually open are about your own site. GSC Insights covers decay, cannibalisation and CTR by position too. GSC Wizard adds forecasting, anomaly alerts, an index tracker on Google's URL Inspection API, Bing data, content groups and topic clusters. It costs €17 a month, less than one extra Ahrefs user.

Watch for. It replaces none of what makes Ahrefs Ahrefs. No backlink index, no keyword database or search volumes, no competitor data, no SERP rank tracker, no full site crawler. If you need any of those, pair it with a suite or with Ahrefs Free. See the full head-to-head.

Cost. 7-day free trial without a card, then Starter at €17 a month (10 live properties plus 5 with stored history, 15 in total, 1 invited seat), Pro at €39 (50 plus 25, 75 in total, 3 seats) and Business at €249 (500 plus 150, 650 in total, 10 seats). In US dollars that is $19, $49 and $299. Every feature is on every plan. There is no free plan for the web app and no annual discount. GSC Wizard pricing. Price checked Oct 3, 2026.

5. Ahrefs Free

What it is. The free tier of Ahrefs, formerly called Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. For sites you verify, which takes Owner permission on the Search Console property or a DNS or HTML check, it gives limited access to Site Audit (5,000 crawl credits a month per project), Site Explorer (1,000 backlinks and keywords visible at once), Web Analytics and the GSC Insights reports.

Why pick it over Ahrefs. The cheapest Ahrefs alternative is a smaller Ahrefs. For sites you verify, the free tier keeps Site Audit, a limited Site Explorer, Web Analytics and GSC Insights. If you cancelled because you only ever looked at your own domains, this may be all you needed.

Watch for. It is not a competitor research tool: Site Explorer shows 1,000 backlinks and keywords at a time, and the free tier is for sites you verify. Site Audit is limited to 5,000 crawl credits a month per project.

Cost. Free for verified site owners, with unlimited verified websites. Ahrefs Free. Price checked Oct 3, 2026.

6. Bing Webmaster Tools

What it is. Microsoft's free equivalent of Search Console, with 16 months of search performance data, URL inspection, IndexNow, backlink data, keyword research and a site scan. Since February 2026 it also reports how often your pages are cited in Copilot and in Bing's AI answers.

Why pick it over Ahrefs. Often overlooked. Bing Webmaster Tools is free and includes backlink data, a keyword research tool, a site scan and URL inspection, plus a report on citations in Copilot and Bing's AI answers. Together with Google Search Console it covers a small site's needs at no cost.

Watch for. The data reflects Bing's crawl and Bing's searchers, not Google's, and it is not a competitor research tool in the way Site Explorer is.

Cost. Free. Price checked Oct 3, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Ahrefs alternative?

For the same job, Semrush: it is the closest match, with a keyword database and backlink index of comparable size. For a lower price, SE Ranking. If you only need to analyse your own site's search performance, a Search Console tool such as GSC Wizard does that in more depth for much less, but it has no backlink or competitor data.

Is there a free alternative to Ahrefs?

Ahrefs Free itself, for sites you verify. Bing Webmaster Tools adds free backlink data and keyword research, and Google Search Console covers your own search performance. None of them replaces Site Explorer for researching competitors.

Does Ahrefs have a free trial?

No. Ahrefs says it never runs discounts and points website owners to Ahrefs Free instead. Semrush has a 7-day trial and SE Ranking a 14-day trial.

Can GSC Wizard replace Ahrefs?

No, not as a suite. It has no backlinks, keyword database, competitor data, SERP rank tracker or full site crawler. It can replace the part of an Ahrefs subscription that people use to look at their own Search Console data.
